We the undersigned, support Animals Aotearoa’s complaint regarding the misleading labels on chicken meat.
This complaint pertains to the use of the labels Cage Free, Barn Raised and No Added Hormones. While these labels appear to imply the meat is more ethically produced or different than other brands, this is false. All chickens farmed for meat in New Zealand are raised in barns, cages are never used, and hormones are never given.
Please investigate the use of these labels and take enforcement action to stop people being deceived in the future.
78% of Kiwis want to see an independent third-party standard to define labelling claims about chicken meat sold in New Zealand.
The latest Horizon Poll, commissioned by Animals Aotearoa, showed that two-thirds of people thought the type of life a chicken had was important. This isn’t surprising in a nation of animal lovers; we pride ourselves on how we treat animals. What this poll has shown us though is that the way chicken companies treat chickens is really out of step with people’s expectations.
Many people have become accustomed to the types of greenwashing common at the grocery store, but they don’t realise the same practices are being employed by the animal agriculture industry to imply their products are more humane or ethical than they really are.
THIS IS HUMANEWASHING.
Learn More About the Polling
The Horizon Research Poll surveyed New Zealanders on their attitudes towards chicken welfare, how they did their shopping and what was important to them when seeing labels on chicken meat.
The poll showed that many people are being misled by labels used to imply higher welfare treatment of chickens – when the reality is they are buying the lowest standard on the market.
There was also strong support (77%) calling on supermarkets to provide chicken meat that meets the higher animal welfare standards of the Better Chicken Commitment, standards which result in healthier chickens raised by farmers who treat them better.
Find out even more about the results of this poll, and what it means for chickens and for you as someone who cares about the welfare of farmed animals.
