At Animals Aotearoa, collaboration is the key to transforming the future for animals. By working together, we can amplify our impact and make meaningful strides toward a kinder world.
Our Executive Director, Marianne Macdonald, recently travelled to Sydney to represent Animals Aotearoa at the Effective Altruism Global X conference and a dedicated Animal Advocacy Satellite Event. The trip offered a packed schedule of presentations, discussions, and meetings with like-minded organisations, all focused on driving change for animals.

Effective Altruism uses evidence and analysis to make the greatest possible difference. Marianne’s presentation at the conference highlighted this principle, focusing on corporate campaigning strategies to improve animal welfare. Read more about Effective Altruism.
She shared a sobering look at the severe suffering endured by chickens bred for meat and explained how strategic corporate policy changes can address this issue. Her insights into the tactics needed to persuade food businesses to commit to higher welfare standards captivated attendees, sparking a lively Q&A session with animal advocates eager to take action.
April Broadbent, campaigner for Better Chicken Australia (BCA), did a fact-filled Lightning talk about their work to raise public awareness of the suffering of chickens bred for meat and the higher welfare standards of the Better Chicken Commitment.

The event also featured thought-provoking discussions on political advocacy and the potential of Artificial Intelligence to influence animal welfare — both positively and negatively. The energy and enthusiasm of advocates from across Australia and New Zealand were inspiring, showing the collective drive to push these issues forward.
Marianne says, “I’m always energised being in a room of like-minded people really invested in making the world a better place for animals. And when everyone is coming from a perspective of ‘how can we make the most impact?’ we really can make a big difference. As always with conferences like these, I made valuable connections that will last long into the future, helping build a stronger trans-Tasman movement for animals .”
Marianne’s trip also strengthened relationships with organisations like The Australian Alliance for Animals, World Animal Protection, and Animals Australia. Together, we strategised on advancing campaigns focused on chickens reared for meat — a priority issue for us all.
